How to Clean a Bunn Coffee Maker — Proper Ways To Clean Tips and Tricks and More

When it comes to making coffee at home, Bunn is one of the most trusted brand names and this can be attested by hotels, restaurants, and other food service establishments that use their commercial espresso machines to serve hot, delicious espresso drinks in just seconds. To keep coffee makers running at their best, routine cleaning and maintenance are required. Below are the steps for cleaning a Bunn coffee maker.

Cleaning a Bunn Coffee Machine

You should at least clean your Bunn coffeemakers a few times a week, even if they're not broken. However, if you live in an area with hard water, you may want to do this every day.

Step 1: Switch off Machine

The first thing you should do if you want to avoid electric shock is unplugged your coffee maker from the wall outlet. It’s an easy step, but it is also vital to prevent workplace injuries.

Step 2: Clean the surfaces

Soak a clean soft cloth in warm water and mild soap. Make sure the detergents you use are mild and non-abrasive. Clean the surfaces of the coffee pot using a damp cloth.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry

Use a damp cloth without soap to rinse the machine. After that, use a dry cloth to wipe down the machine.

Step 4: Clean and Soak the Carafe

You may sometimes see brownish circles inside the carafe. It’s normal and can usually be removed by soaking it in some mild dish soap for a few minutes. Wash the outside of the carafe with dish soap and water. After letting it soak for a few hours, wash it off, and let it air dry.

If you want to use your coffee maker again, note that you can also run the carafes through your dishwasher, use a vinegar solution, or wash them with a mixture of water and baking soda.

Step 5: Remove and clean the spray head

Remove the coffee maker spray head from its holder. With the pointed end of the cleaning tool, carefully remove any minerals deposited inside the holes in the nozzle.

Step 6: Clean the spray head fitting

Use the long end of the cleaning tool to clean the spray head fitting. Make sure to use the rotating motions of the tool several times until mineral deposits are removed.

Step 7: Clean the bypass fitting

Insert the long end of the cleaning tool into the bypass fitting. Turn the tool several times until minerals are removed from the surface. Clean up any soap residue with a clean cloth, and then attach the sprayer again.

Step 8: Clean the Spray Tube

Some Bunn coffee makers include a cleaning tool for the spray tube. Simply remove the brew funnel and the spray nozzle first. After doing this, insert the toothbrush into the tube and brush it back and forth while slowly rotating it. After removing all deposits from the brew funnel, reassemble the funnel and attach the nozzle again.

Step 9: Descale

Descalers help clean out minerals and hard water deposits from machines. You should definitely do this deep cleaning at least once a week. Especially if you live in an area where there is hard water. Follow the steps below carefully.

How to Descale Bunn Coffee Machine

  • Step 1: Descale Coffee Maker With Vinegar Fill a whole coffee maker with white vinegar and then add some distilled water. Make sure to mix the 1/3 cups of vinegar and 2/3 fresh water together in equal parts.
  • Step 2: Start a brewing cycle with a descaler in it Put the descaler into the water tank, and turn on the machine. It will allow the mixture to clean out any lime and mineral deposits from the inside of the coffee maker.
  • Step 3: Discard the brewed cleaner After the normal cycle, discard the descaling solution.
  • Step 4: Clean the spray head and fittings Turn the coffee maker off, and unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Then, clean the spray head and its open fittings. Start by removing the head and using the pointed end of the spray head cleaning tool to remove deposits from the open holes. Next, use the long head of the tool to clean the spray head and bypass fittings.
  • Step 5: Perform rinse cycles (water only) Plug and turn the machine on, and put some clean water in its reservoir. After using the descaler, start another brew cycle to help remove any remaining odors or unpleasant vinegar taste from the vinegar or descaler. If needed, repeat the clean water cycle until the smells go away.

Tips and Tricks When Cleaning A Bunn Coffee Maker

You may not always notice that your coffee maker needs to be cleaned, because there could be minerals accumulating on the inside while the outside looks clean. If you don't clean your coffeemaker often enough, it can quickly turn into a breeding ground for bacteria.

Where Do Germs Lurk in Coffee Makers?

You probably didn't realize that your coffee maker has one of the dirtiest parts in your house or office. Some coffee makers can even be more germ-ridden than some bathrooms. When you consider the elements involved: moisture, water temperature, and frequency of use, it's not as shocking

  • Disposable Coffee Cups: You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that the disposable coffee cups you use every day are crawling not just with germy bacteria but also with viruses. It's not surprising that coffee drinkers may have ended up touching not only their cup, but other unused ones as well
  • Coffee Pot Handles: The coffee pot handles are also among the dirtiest parts of your espresso maker. Regardless of whether you're in an environment with a shared coffee pot or at home with your roommate, your significant other, or your parents, the handle is a germ-filled place.
