From transforming cucumbers into noodles, and frying eggs in pesto, to making everything taste better, there are so many trends influencing our cooking and eating habits today. If you're the type that would scroll through TikTok, you're probably familiar with the crazy trends on your For You Page. Lucky for you, we've compiled the top viral videos on FoodTok and rated which ones are worth trying and the ones that you should probably skip.

2022 TikTok Food Trends

Food Trends Worth Trying:

  • Salmon Rice: Creator, Emily Mariko, made a way to make leftovers healthy and delicious and practically influenced millions of viewers to happily start dousing their rice with mayo and Siracha to recreate this tasty dish.
  • Pickled Garlic: Many food bloggers have tried this as a snack and if you're a fan of spicy things and garlic, this one is for you.
  • Asian Cucumber Salad: This marinated cucumber salad recipe blew up on TikTok and for good reasons!
  • Custard Yogurt Toast: It's a great way of mixing savory and sweet to your breakfast menu!
  • Baked Oats: Want to have an excuse for eating desserts for breakfast? This healthy treat is personally one of our go-to's.
  • Cloud Bread: This good gluten-free option is pretty versatile in nature.
  • Hailey Bieber's Strawberry Glaze Smoothie: Celebrities and influencers raving about this pricey smoothie got us curious and we are not disappointed. (Spoiler alert: It's amazing)
  • Pesto Eggs: Restaurant-quality breakfast? Yes, please!
  • Avocado, condensed milk, and ice: This is a personal favorite of mine and a fun fact: I grew up loving this treat! It's not for everyone, especially if you're used to eating avocados in savory dishes. But, to each their own!

Food Trends That Maybe You Should Avoid

  • Healthy Coke: This is supposed to be a healthier version of coke but consuming that much balsamic vinegar can actually ruin your teeth.
  • Mini Pancakes: This is a fun concept but ultimately hard to recreate.
  • Pink Sauce: The infamous pink sauce. This non-FDA-approved sauce made headlines. But not for great reasons.

What's Trending?

1) Salmon Rice Bowl

One of the latest viral TikTok recipes is the Salmon Rice Bowl. First introduced by TikTok user Emily Mariko, this dish is an innovative way to use up leftover ingredients.

How to make it: Flake the canned or cooked salmon. Top it with rice and mix it all together with soy sauce, mayo, and sriracha. The original creator garnished it with sliced cucumbers, seaweed snacks, and kimchi but you can garnish your bowl however you like.

2) Healthy Coke

If you haven't heard about this drink yet, we hope you're not living under a rock. Due to the simple ingredients and straight-out weirdness, the healthy Coca-Cola trend has taken off on TikTok.

How to make it: It's basically just sparkling mineral water and balsamic vinegar mixed together, but some people swear that it tastes just like Coke. We don't recommend trying it, but if you want to give it a go, then maybe try not to put too much balsamic vinegar. Consuming too much balsamic vinegar could erode dental enamel due to its acidity, and it may contain some lead.

3) Pickled garlic

The original creator created a craze with this one. With about 373,000 Google search results, and 158.4 million views, the content creator started by emptying the liquid from the jar of pickled garlic and replacing it with hot sauce, thyme, and chili powder.

How to eat it: Most people enjoy it as a snack or a side dish.

4) Cucumber Salad

Besides being unique, people really enjoy making these TikTok recipes because they're easy to make. This Asian Cucumbers Salad is easy to make, and it's delicious! It’s simply cucumbers soaked in a simple marinara sauce made from ingredients we probably already have in our kitchens. The only thing special here is the method for cutting the cucumbers.

How to make it: You can use any type of cucumber for this one.

  • Cut the ends off of two cucumbers. Place one cucumber in between two chopsticks. The chopsticks will help you avoid cutting all the way through the vegetable. Start by cutting off the ends of the cucumbers at an angle of 45 degrees.
  • Turn the cucumber to the other side and slice it straight or perpendicular to the skin. Put into a bow with minced garlic, soya sauce, sesame oil (or tahini), rice vinegar, toasting sesame seeds, red chili peppers, and sugar.

5) Custard yogurt toast

Toast is a versatile alternative to a bowl of cereal for an easy morning meal. It can be topped with anything from savory mashed avocados and eggs to the classic pairing of peanut butter and bananas. However, it doesn't need to be the same old breakfast every day. You can try out this custard yogurt toast inspired by TikTok's latest trend! It's basically a mashup of cheesecakes and French toast, so it's both savory and sweet.

How to make it:

It involves Greek yogurt, bread, and an air fryer. It's even easier than making a cheesecake from scratch! Take any piece of bread and flatten its center with a spoon and flatten it in the center. Next, mix together some plain Greek-style yogurt, an egg, and sugar. Then, top them off with some delicious toppings and then cook or air fry them until they reach a creme brûlé-like texture. If you want something sweet, replace plain white toast with a slice of thick brioches or even pound cake. Add some mascarpone or ricottas instead of plain yogurt.

6) Baked Oats: Dessert for Breakfast!

Overnight oat bowls are taking over the breakfast scene. This huge trend has been rising in popularity since 2022 when creators started making videos that looked and tasted like chocolate chip cookie dough, cake batter, and even ice cream. These trending delicious additions to your breakfast or brunch plates are much healthier than your average waffles or pancakes without missing out on their flavors.

7) Hailey Bieber's Strawberry Glaze Smoothie

While we may not be able to get our hands on the actual $17 Hailey Bieber Smoothie at Erewhon, TikTok has taught us how to recreate this beautiful trend using ingredients found at any grocery store.

How to make it:

You don't need to buy expensive ingredients to create a delicious strawberry glaze smoothie. Instead, use these simple ingredients to make one yourself.

  • Frozen strawberries
  • Dates
  • Avocado
  • Maple syrup
  • Vanilla collagen powder
  • Almond milk
  • Coconut cream
  • Strawberry glaze

8) Cloud Bread

People who are Gluten-free and enjoy bread will love this deliciously light TikTok trend. Cloud Bread is basically a bread made with egg white and a few other pantry-friendly items (usually sugar and corn starch) but without any wheat. Cloud Bread isn't quite as satisfying or tasty as the real deal, but it's still fun and easy to whip up and can be used for any number of purposes. You can even make a cloud version of tortillas or pitas!

9) Pesto Eggs

If you're no longer in the mood for avocado toast, why not give pesto eggs a go instead? Make sure to cook an egg in the pesto sauce of your choosing, then spread it onto a piece of toast topped with ricotta cheese and slices of avocado. Make yourself a delicious breakfast at home by finishing off with a drizzle of warmed honey and a sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes.

10) Avocado, condensed milk, and ice

Social media platforms such as TikTok allow people from all walks of life to share their knowledge about different cultures and cuisines. Avocados are not just for toast and salad! They're perfect for desserts too. With just three simple recipes: avocado, sweet condensed milk, and ice —this viral concoction is nothing less than brilliant. It has a deep, rich flavor profile that includes creamy, sweet, and bone-crunching flavors.

If you look at the results of just one video clip, you probably won't be able to identify any of the individual components that went into making the final product. However, once you truly understand its flavors, its simplicity shines through. It's deeply ingrained into Filipino and Vietnamese cuisines, with lots of variety depending on individual homes and cultures. For example, my family and I prefer blending all the ingredients to make a delicious smoothie. You can add some evaporated milk or even mix it up into a smoothy, popsicle, or avocado milkshake. 11) Mini pancake cereal

Content creator, Sydney Melhoff (@sydneymelhoff), created these miniaturized pancakes to imitate the traditional cereal.

To replicate a bowlful of cereal, people use small pancake batter and put them into bowls usually covered with maple sugar and butter.

12) Pasta chips

Air fryers and pasta recipes are two popular TikTok food trends that have people trying out some really weird foods. Viral recipes like the baked feta pasta and Gigi Hadid's spicy vodka dishes have been consistently popular on TikTok for a while now. None of these foods compares to pasta chips' sheer genius and strangeness.

How to Make it:

They're not raw pasta deep fried with seasoning. It's a dish prepared by cooking pasta in oil and spices and frying the cooked pasta until crispy and golden. They might not be any healthier than the real potato chips, but this pasta dish is just as starchy and tasty (and much easier to make).

You could add Italian seasonings, cheese, and a tomato dipping sauce when making your own pasta chip recipes. Perhaps you'd like to take one of the cheesy forks in the road and make some Cheetos pasta chips. And then again, there are flavors like salt and pepper or sour cream and onions that make for the perfect pairing between potatoes and pasta.

13) The Pink Sauce

Bottles of Pink sauce are now trending everywhere. According to the Pink sauce site, this condiment contains dragon fruit, which has been described as having "a sweet flavor reminiscent of lychees," and sunflower seed oil. Previous nutrition label lists included pink Himalayan sea salt and less than 2 percent of lemon, milk, and citric acid. This sauce made it to the headlines due to allegations of selling food without any FDA approval. The creator has also faced issues regarding the pink sauce so maybe you skip this dangerous food trend.
